Chile Heads to Nov. 16 Vote With Jara Leading a Fragmented Presidential Field

Under Chile’s rules, a Dec. 14 runoff follows if no contender reaches a majority in the first round.

Overview

  • Recent polls show Jeannette Jara ahead of José Antonio Kast in first-round intent, including Cadem (30% to 22%) and Criteria (27% to 23%), while CEP reports a 23% tie.
  • Other contenders trail in varying order across surveys, with Evelyn Matthei, Franco Parisi and Johannes Kaiser clustered in the mid-to-low teens depending on the poll.
  • Voting on Nov. 16 is mandatory for registered electors in Chile, while Chileans abroad may cast presidential ballots voluntarily in person at consulates during posted hours.
  • The general election also renews all 155 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 23 of 50 Senate seats using the D’Hondt open-list system, with 1,096 deputy and 125 senate candidates registered.
  • SERVEL estimates more than 15.7 million citizens are eligible to vote, and President Gabriel Boric cannot seek immediate re-election under the Constitution.
