Childhood Friend Arrested in Patiala MBBS Student Murder

Forensic findings of multiple, deep neck and facial stab wounds and traced CCTV and financial traces prompted police to charge and detain the suspect.

Overview

  • Police found the 24-year-old medical student dead in his New Lal Bagh paying-guest room on Monday after friends who could not reach him entered and discovered his body.
  • Autopsy placed the time of death between about 6:15 and 7:15 am and recorded more than ten deep stab wounds mainly to the neck and face, which officials called exceptionally violent.
  • An FIR named the victim’s childhood friend, Mohit Verma, who had stayed overnight and was initially on the run before being arrested by investigators.
  • Investigators said they used CCTV showing a bloodstained person fleeing, questioned other PG residents, conducted raids, recovered the alleged weapon and traced an alleged nearly ₹25,000 transfer from the victim’s phone to the accused.
  • The killing has shaken the local student community and the victim’s family, who allege a money dispute; police say the probe will examine motive and all digital, forensic and witness evidence before filing formal charges.
