Child and Man Shot Near Playground in Baltimore’s Upton Neighborhood

Detectives are canvassing for video after police say suspects fired from a vehicle toward a playground and struck an 11-year-old bystander.

Overview

  • Police responded just after 7:40 p.m. to Pennsylvania Avenue and Dolphin Street near a school and recreation center where a 26-year-old man and an 11-year-old boy were shot and taken to hospitals in stable condition.
  • Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said two people in a vehicle pulled up across from a playground and fired toward the play area, apparently targeting the adult while the child was hit by indiscriminate gunfire.
  • Worley told reporters investigators have a description of the vehicle, believe one shooter had a rifle, and do not think the two victims were related.
  • Authorities are canvassing the neighborhood for surveillance video and witnesses and asked the public to contact Metro Crime Stoppers at 866-7LOCKUP with tips.
  • Neighbors described frequent shootings in the area and expressed alarm that children use nearby playgrounds and youth facilities, an issue city officials say they are investigating as the case develops.
