Chicago Vigil and $20,000 Rewards Follow Daylight Ambush That Killed Mother

Detectives are using surveillance footage plus community tips to identify the masked gunmen.

Overview

  • Gabryel Ayers, 26, was fatally shot on Feb. 4 when multiple attackers opened fire on a car at 79th and May, striking it about 50 times before it crashed into another vehicle.
  • A 27-year-old man in the car was wounded in the buttocks and arm and is in good condition, while the infant in the back seat was unharmed and is now with family.
  • Witness video shows at least three masked shooters dressed in black running up to the white sedan, firing, then fleeing in a red getaway car after returning to shoot additional rounds.
  • No arrests have been announced as of Feb. 7, and police held an outdoor roll call at the scene during a community vigil attended by Mayor Brandon Johnson and faith leaders.
  • Rewards totaling $20,000 have been offered by Cook County Crime Stoppers and St. Sabina for tips leading to an arrest, with information accepted anonymously through the CPD tip line and Crime Stoppers hotline.
