Chicago River To Be Dyed Green Saturday At 10 A.M. For St. Patrick’s Day

Officials have set bridge and Riverwalk restrictions, with a livestream option for remote viewers.

Overview

  • Dyeing begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14, as Plumbers Local 130 spreads an orange powder from boats that turns the water emerald within about an hour.
  • The treated stretch runs from just west of the Columbus bridge to east of Orleans before Wolf Point.
  • During the operation, bridges are closed to spectators, with Columbus, LaSalle and Orleans open to traffic, and the Riverwalk is shut from 11 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Sunday.
  • Recommended viewing is between Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive and along Upper Wacker Drive, with the State Street bridge closed to spectators this year.
  • NBC Chicago will stream the dyeing live at 10 a.m. on Peacock, Roku and Pluto, and CPD will increase its presence at St. Patrick’s events across the city.
