Chicago Police Fatally Shoot Driver After Fleeing Stop Tied to Possible Expressway Shooting

Overview

  • Officers attempted an investigatory stop around 5:38–5:41 p.m. Monday on the 800 block of North Homan Avenue on Chicago’s West Side.
  • Police say a white Mercedes, flagged by radio as linked to a possible I-290 and Austin shooting, fled and struck a woman, a CTA bus, and an unmarked squad car.
  • As officers moved to take the driver into custody, one officer fired, and the man was later pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital.
  • CPD reports a firearm was recovered from the vehicle; the pedestrian was listed in good condition and two officers were treated for minor injuries.
  • COPA opened a use-of-force review and CPD’s Investigative Response Team is handling the criminal case; the driver’s identity remains undisclosed and involved officers were placed on at least 30 days of administrative duty.
