Overview
- Police say the shooting occurred around 10:25 p.m. in the 5700 block of North Washtenaw Avenue.
- Officers were checking an unoccupied stolen sedan when a second car arrived, two men tried to access the stolen vehicle, and a struggle followed after one man returned to the driver’s seat.
- During the struggle, the driver accelerated and dragged an officer before the officer fired one shot and the vehicle crashed into a parked car.
- The wounded driver was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital and was later pronounced dead, and his name has not been released.
- A woman in the car was taken into custody as two firearms were recovered, the dragged officer sustained minor injuries, and the involved officer was placed on routine administrative duty for at least 30 days.
