Chicago Names Snowplow ‘Abolish ICE’ After Record Vote, Drawing DHS Pushback

The result turns a lighthearted naming ritual into a barometer of Chicago’s response to federal immigration enforcement.

Overview

  • City officials announced six winners—Abolish ICE, Stephen Coldbert, Pope Frío XIV, The Blizzard of Oz, Svencoolie and Caleb Chilliams—after the two-week public vote closed on February 14.
  • The contest set records with roughly 13,300 name submissions and about 39,000 final votes, according to the Department of Streets and Sanitation.
  • Block Club Chicago reported that “Abolish ICE” accounted for about 9,200 submissions, making it the runaway favorite among entrants.
  • Mayor Brandon Johnson had endorsed the “Abolish ICE” entry in December, and the city says each winning name will be displayed on a plow assigned to one of Chicago’s six snow districts with a photo opportunity for the first submitter.
  • DHS official Lauren Bis criticized attacks on ICE in response to the outcome, while CBP-linked commander Greg Bovino had earlier mocked the mayor’s support on X.
