Chicago Fire Sets March 3 Groundbreaking for $650 Million Stadium at The 78

The privately funded project targets the 2028–29 MLS season.

  • A City of Chicago tent permit issued Feb. 23 for 1335 S. Lumber Street authorizes a temporary structure from Feb. 26 to March 5 for the one-day event.
  • Remediation crews began Phase 1 site work last week, and the cleanup is expected to take four to six weeks before heavier construction begins.
  • The $650 million, 22,000-seat venue is privately financed by Mansueto, designed by Gensler and assigned to Pepper Construction, GMA Construction Group and ALL Construction Group as general contractors.
  • Core construction permits for vertical piles and shallow foundations at 1331 S. Wells Street remain pending in the city portal, and the venue is planned for multiuse programming including concerts and global events.
