Chicago Board Approves CPS Calendars for 2026–28, Keeping Finals After Winter Break

A community survey showing 55% support for the district’s plan guided the unanimous vote.

Overview

  • Chicago’s Board of Education unanimously adopted the 2026–27 and 2027–28 calendars on Feb. 26 after weeks of public feedback.
  • K–12 classes start Aug. 24, 2026 and end June 11, 2027; for 2027–28 they run Aug. 23, 2027 to June 9, 2028, with pre-K starting one day later each year.
  • The first semester will conclude after winter break, placing finals and second-quarter assessments post-break, a timing some board members say could strain student wellbeing.
  • Both years include 176 student attendance days plus four Teacher Institute Days, four school improvement days, four professional development days, and two parent‑teacher conference days.
  • The calendars preserve a week-long Thanksgiving break, a two‑week winter break and a Nov. 3 Election Day off, and they restore a longer summer of roughly 81 days compared with the prior year’s 67-day break.
