Chicago and Milwaukee Pursuits End in Juvenile Arrests After Gunfire

Both cases now face oversight review.

Overview

  • In Chicago’s Brighton Park, officers in an unmarked car tried to stop a vehicle when someone inside fired at them, and the car later crashed in an alley near West 47th Street where police say a suspect fired again and officers returned fire.
  • Police reported no one was struck by gunfire in Chicago, three people were arrested including two juveniles, two guns were recovered, and the officers were moved to at least 30 days of administrative duty under a Civilian Office of Police Accountability inquiry.
  • COPA said it cannot release video or case materials from the Chicago shooting because the Juvenile Court Act restricts public disclosure when minors are involved.
  • In Milwaukee, police say a suspect fired a single shot during an attempted vehicle theft, fled with two others, and a pursuit ended in a crash near North 12th Street and West State Street before officers arrested boys ages 16, 14, and 11 after a short foot chase.
  • Milwaukee police said all three juveniles had non-life-threatening injuries from the crash, a firearm and a reported stolen vehicle were recovered, and the case will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney for possible charges.
