Chiapas 4.1 Before Dawn Caps Weekend of Low-Magnitude Quakes in Mexico and Peru

Officials explained Mexico’s seismic alert did not sound because the recent events were below activation thresholds.

Overview

  • Mexico’s National Seismological Service reported a magnitude 4.1 quake at 00:59 on Feb. 16 northeast of Mapastepec, Chiapas, at a depth of 173.1 km.
  • Earlier on Feb. 15, the SSN logged quakes of magnitudes 3.1 and 2.9 southwest of Pichucalco, Chiapas, without triggering the Mexico City alert system.
  • A microsismo of magnitude 1.3 was recorded in Naucalpan, State of Mexico, at 08:32 on Feb. 15 following small events the previous day, with residents reporting brief but startling shaking and no reported injuries or damage.
  • Peru’s Geophysical Institute confirmed a magnitude 4.2 event at 04:14 on Feb. 15 located 57 km southeast of Calana, Tacna, at a depth of about 127 km.
  • Civil-protection authorities reiterated preparedness guidance as SASMEX remained inactive, noting activation criteria tied to magnitude and distance that typically require stronger events.
