Chevron Confirms Major Oil and Condensate Discovery Offshore Angola

The company says the 105-4X well hit a very large hydrocarbon column and is assessing a tie-back to Block 0 facilities to speed and lower-cost development.

Overview

  • Chevron confirmed on Monday, August 17 that its Cabinda Gulf Oil Company-operated 105-4X well in Block 0 encountered a hydrocarbon column exceeding 2,000 feet and more than 300 feet of net pay in the Pinda reservoir.
  • The company is evaluating whether the find can be tied back to existing Block 0 platforms, a move that would reduce new construction, shorten time to first production, and lower capital spending if appraisal supports it.
  • Block 0 is operated by Chevron’s Cabinda Gulf Oil Company with partners Sonangol E&P (41%), TotalEnergies (10%), and Azule Energy (9.8%), so any development will require agreement across the joint venture.
  • Markets reacted modestly to the news with Chevron shares rising about 1.4%, and the discovery reinforces Chevron’s wider push into West and southern African exploration following recent activity in Nigeria and first oil from the South N’dola platform in December 2025.
  • Key uncertainties remain because Chevron has not released recoverable resource estimates, and the next steps are appraisal drilling, reservoir evaluation, and possible use of improved seismic imaging to define commercial potential.
