Chernobyl Zone Wildfire Under Control After Drone Crashes Ignite 1,200-Hectare Blaze

Landmines are limiting ground access for crews.

Overview

  • Officials said a fire in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone burned about 1,200 hectares after two unmanned drones crashed in the reserve.
  • At least 374 responders with 84 pieces of equipment are fighting the blaze, and reserve staff are rescuing wildlife from threatened areas.
  • The burn has hit the Opachychi, Teremtsi, and Paryshiv Forestry Research Divisions and the Korohod Forestry District.
  • Strong winds lifted flames into the treetops, creating a crown fire that spread along the left bank of the Pripyat River.
  • Radiation readings in the area measured 0.19 to 0.35 μSv/h, which the reserve reported as normal for the monitored sites.
