Cheltenham Cancels Final Three Racedays for Immediate Drainage Overhaul

The early shutdown prioritizes a full drainage upgrade to let the track recover before next season.

Overview

  • Cheltenham, which announced the move Monday, canceled its last three fixtures to start upgrading drainage in the Old Course home straight.
  • The project targets the section linked to January’s hole, running from the top of the pull-up area down the home straight to a drain outlet at the foot of the hill.
  • The Jockey Club said it brought the work forward after consulting groundstaff, drainage specialists, agronomists and the BHA to use current soil moisture and speed recovery before October.
  • Four April races were moved to Market Rasen on April 14, Warwick on April 23 and Sandown on April 25, and the May 1 hunter-chase meeting will run at Warwick.
  • General admission tickets will be refunded automatically, and members get a 7% fee discount, two free raceday tickets and access to the rescheduled meetings.
