Charter Closes $34.5 Billion Deal to Combine Cox and Liberty Broadband Under Spectrum Footprint

The close gives the company national scale to compete, prompting immediate customer offers and planned leadership and branding changes.

Overview

  • Charter completed the $34.5 billion transaction on Thursday, August 20, 2026, acquiring Cox Communications and Liberty Broadband to create a single national broadband, video and mobile company operating under the Spectrum brand in markets.
  • The deal brings roughly 6 million Cox subscribers into an expanded 45-state Spectrum footprint and will keep the company headquartered in Stamford, Conn., while maintaining a major presence in Atlanta.
  • To welcome former Cox customers, Spectrum is offering a free year of mobile service to eligible Cox internet customers who do not already subscribe to Cox Mobile and plans to roll out Spectrum’s full product suite and pricing in former Cox markets in mid-September.
  • Corporate governance will change immediately with Eric Zinterhofer serving as lead independent director and Alex Taylor becoming chairman, and the parent company will be renamed Cox Communications within a year while retaining the Spectrum consumer brand.
  • The merger closed after FCC approval and includes operational commitments made to regulators such as onshoring previously offshore jobs, a $20-per-hour minimum starting wage for Cox workers, and California-specific network investment and affordability pledges.
