ChargePoint Warns of 2026 Bottleneck as EV Charging Demand Outpaces New Ports

Rising utilization reflects a larger EV fleet driving more frequent charging.

Overview

  • In 2025, charging sessions on ChargePoint’s network rose 34% while new ports grew 16%, pushing utilization nearly 20 percentage points faster than installations.
  • ChargePoint added 190,000 ports last year and now directly manages roughly 375,000 ports with access to more than 900,000 additional roaming locations.
  • The company says more than 1 million drivers use its network each month, with plug-in hybrids accounting for 16% of commercial AC sessions identified in its app.
  • Nearly 60% of the 19.3 billion electric miles enabled by ChargePoint since 2007 occurred in the past two years, indicating a sharp acceleration in use.
  • ChargePoint cautions the squeeze on charger availability could intensify in 2026 unless installation rates increase, even as it estimates 714 million gallons of gasoline and over $2 billion in fuel costs have been avoided, cutting 4.5 million metric tons of emissions.
