Changi Sets New 12-Month Record as Q1 Traffic Grows Despite Middle East Slump

Airlines rebalanced routes to keep traffic growing despite a steep drop to the Middle East.

Overview

  • Changi Airport Group, which released its latest statistics Friday, reported a 12-month passenger high of 70.4 million, up 2.9 percent year on year.
  • Passenger movements reached about 17.6 million in the first quarter, a 2.3 percent rise from a year earlier driven by stronger demand to North Asia and Europe.
  • Travel between Singapore and the Middle East fell about 80 percent in March after flight disruptions and cancellations linked to the regional conflict.
  • Airlines added about 90 replacement flights in March to cities such as Frankfurt, London, Munich, Muscat, Paris, Perth and Sydney to absorb displaced demand.
  • Changi broadened its network and freight options with new Scoot and Jetstar routes and a new Qantas Freight service, as cargo volumes rose 7.6 percent in Q1.
