Centre to Roll Out All Major Science and Innovation Schemes in West Bengal

Officials say the rollout aims to boost student and women participation, fast-track CSIR arsenic studies, start coordinated clinical trials across state institutions.

Overview

  • Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari agreed to immediate implementation of central science, research, innovation and startup schemes in the state following a meeting on Tuesday.
  • The Centre has cleared CSIR-led scientific studies into long-standing arsenic contamination in several districts and has authorised coordinated clinical and drug-trial research on cancer and antimicrobial therapies.
  • Flagship student- and women-focused programmes such as INSPIRE, INSPIRE MANAK, Vigyan Jyoti, KIRAN and WISE will be expanded across schools and colleges to boost STEM skill-building and female participation.
  • A preliminary coordination meeting of state and central science officials will be held in the coming days to draft a detailed implementation roadmap and assign roles to research councils, medical colleges and hospitals.
  • Officials say faster central rollout could improve local health and innovation outcomes by channeling central funding, lab capacity and trial networks into regional problems, but practical effects will depend on the roadmap and rapid interagency coordination.
