Centre Reports 88% Fall in Maoist Violence, Now Limited to Eight Districts

The home ministry told Parliament it will use rehabilitation, targeted development, stronger local governance to meet a March 2026 eradication goal.

Overview

  • In 2025, security forces recorded 364 Maoists killed, 1,022 arrests and 2,337 surrenders, with fatalities of civilians and personnel down to 100 from 1,005 in 2010.
  • The eight affected districts are Bijapur, Dantewada, Gariyaband, Kanker, Narayanpur and Sukma in Chhattisgarh, West Singhbhum in Jharkhand and Kandhamal in Odisha, with three still classed as most affected.
  • Officials said police stations reporting LWE violence fell from 465 in 2010 to 119 in 2025, reflecting the contraction of insurgent activity to a few pockets.
  • The Centre highlighted consolidation measures including 15,016 km of LWE-specific roads, 9,233 mobile towers, around 620 fortified police stations, and a 2024 ‘legacy and thrust’ category now covering 30 districts.
  • MHA said it is working with the Panchayati Raj ministry to strengthen local self-governance and rights delivery, even as some families and civil liberties groups dispute certain lethal encounters reported in recent operations.
