Centre Extends Tenure of West Bengal DGP Siddh Nath Gupta by Six Months

The ACC cited public interest to keep policing leadership steady during the state’s election period.

Overview

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved a six-month extension Monday for West Bengal police chief Siddh Nath Gupta beyond his April 30 retirement.
  • The order grants the extension under a relaxation of AIS (DCRB) Rule 16(1), a provision used to retain officers past superannuation in the public interest.
  • The committee is chaired by the Prime Minister with the Union home minister as a member.
  • Gupta, a 1992-batch IPS officer, was appointed DGP by the Election Commission on March 16 after it replaced Peeyush Pandey for the poll period.
  • The extension keeps the same police leadership in place through voting on April 29 and the May 4 count as West Bengal completes its two-phase assembly election.
