Overview
- The Ministry of Defence issued a Gazette notification on Monday that replaces the 1976 S.R.O. 150 and reduces the restricted area around the Juhu Signal Transmitting Station from 457.20 metres to 100 metres.
- The order, published as SRO 33(E) and signed by Joint Secretary Preeti Meena, takes effect from its Gazette publication and includes a sketch plan available for inspection at the Santacruz SDO Buildings and Roads office.
- The notification keeps construction and obstruction bans in force inside the new 100-metre boundary under clause (c) of Section 7 of the Works of Defence Act, 1903.
- Local residents, housing leaders and elected representatives said the revision removes a major administrative hurdle to redevelopment for dozens of ageing buildings and nearby slum clusters that lie outside the new 100-metre limit.
- Legal and procedural steps under the Works of Defence Rules, 2025—including public notices, surveys, claims and any compensation by the Collector—must still be completed before the revised boundary can be fully implemented against landowners.
