Centre Approves ₹1,290 Crore for Pune’s Water Supply and Flood Control

The package signals a public-health push to replace unsafe village water sources tied to GBS cases.

Overview

  • The Urban Challenge Fund’s apex committee, which met Monday, cleared ₹1,290 crore for Pune projects after a presentation by the municipal commissioner.
  • ₹890 crore will build a treated-water system for 12 affected villages with a 200 MLD plant, 71 km of transmission lines, 390 km of distribution pipes, and smart meters with remote control.
  • ₹400 crore is set aside for storm drains and other works at 335 flood‑prone spots to cut monsoon waterlogging and property damage.
  • The new supply network aims to deliver safe drinking water to about 7.78 lakh residents projected for 2052, replacing contaminated sources linked to last year’s GBS cases.
  • PMC says the equal water supply upgrade in the old city is 85% complete and due to go live by August 2026, with village works underway in seven areas and plans ready for 25.
