Overview
- Central Railway implemented the replacement on Monday, June 29, converting 12 Main Line weekday services to AC rakes so the Main Line now runs 92 weekday AC services and the Mumbai Division totals 120 AC services.
- The change keeps the overall weekday suburban timetable intact at 1,820 services by swapping rolling stock rather than creating additional train paths.
- Of the 12 upgraded trains, six run in the UP direction and six in the Down direction, including peak services such as the 6:46 am Titwala–CSMT local and the 7:18 pm CSMT–Kalyan local.
- The AC rakes will operate Monday through Saturday while the corresponding Sunday and nominated-holiday runs will continue to use non-AC rakes, and CR says the move is intended to expand comfortable travel options for commuters.
- The shift follows a steady rollout of AC locals on Mumbai’s suburban network and has produced higher ridership and revenue on lines where AC services were added, which could encourage further rake upgrades without increasing track capacity.
