- Chief of Defence Staff General N S Raja Subramani is preparing to present the final theatreisation proposal to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh by the end of July to seek formal sign-off.
- The blueprint consolidates India’s 17 single-service commands into three primary theatre commands focused on the China-facing north, the Pakistan-facing west, and the maritime domain.
- Each theatre would be led by a four-star commander and the plan would create additional four-star posts including a Vice Chief of Defence Staff to place operational control with theatre commanders.
- The Indian Air Force has raised objections about carving up scarce air assets and command of high-value platforms, while the Army and Navy broadly support the change, leaving rank parity and asset control as key unresolved issues.
- If the defence minister approves the file it will go to the Cabinet Committee on Security for final clearance and then begin a phased, multi-year implementation that builds on lessons from Kargil and Operation Sindoor.
