CDC Confirms Norovirus Outbreak on Holland America’s Rotterdam Cruise

The CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program is reviewing the ship’s outbreak response following the voyage’s return to Fort Lauderdale.

  • The CDC reports 81 passengers and eight crew experienced vomiting and diarrhea during the Dec. 28–Jan. 9 Caribbean sailing of Rotterdam.
  • The ship carried 2,593 passengers and 1,005 crew and reported the outbreak to the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program on Jan. 8.
  • Holland America says cases were mostly mild and that the ship underwent comprehensive sanitization upon docking in Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 9.
  • Crew isolated ill individuals, increased cleaning and disinfection, and collected stool specimens for testing, consistent with the line’s outbreak plan.
  • The CDC lists norovirus as the cause and is remotely monitoring the response, noting Rotterdam had prior gastrointestinal outbreaks in February and March 2025.
