CD Projekt Red Says Cyberpunk’s Repair Is Incomplete and Looks to The Witcher 4

Restoring player trust will shape the studio’s strategy for upcoming Witcher projects.

Overview

  • Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski said Monday that he does not believe Cyberpunk 2077 completed a full “redemption arc” and that the studio hopes The Witcher 4 can win back players who lost faith.
  • Cyberpunk 2077’s 2020 launch shipped with widespread bugs, prompted refunds, was temporarily removed from the PlayStation Store, and produced investor lawsuits alleging the company misled shareholders.
  • CD Projekt spent years patching the game, released large updates and DLC, and now reports much stronger reception with about 88% positive Steam reviews and 35 million copies sold.
  • The Witcher 4 has no release date and is reported to follow Ciri after her transformation, and CD Projekt has announced a new Witcher 3 DLC, Songs of the Past, that the company says will help set up the sequel.
  • Nowakowski said the studio emerged from the Cyberpunk period with more experienced leaders and that rebuilding reputation is the company’s top priority because player trust affects future sales and franchise momentum.
