CBI Raids Punjab Vigilance Bureau, Arrests 3 in Bribery Trap

The case puts the state’s anti-graft unit under scrutiny after a rare central raid on its headquarters.

Overview

  • The CBI, which laid a sting Monday night in a Chandigarh hotel, recovered Rs 13 lakh and a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 promised as part of the payoff.
  • Investigators arrested middlemen Vikas “Vicky” Goyal and his son Raghav after a chase to the PunjabHaryana border, and they also caught associate Ankit Wadhwa during the trap.
  • A special CBI court sent the Goyals to three days’ custody and Wadhwa to judicial custody, while issuing a non-bailable warrant for OP Rana, the Vigilance chief’s reader who remains absconding.
  • Teams searched the Vigilance Bureau headquarters in Mohali and homes linked to the accused, seizing Rs 9 lakh and documents as they probe suspected leaks of pending case information to private actors.
  • The CBI says the private accused had official Punjab Police gunmen carrying AK-47s, a claim now under review that has drawn sharp opposition attacks and a pledge of cooperation from the bureau.
