CBI Moves Court to Proclaim Two Nirav Modi Aides as Absconders in PNB Fraud Case

The request would enable property confiscation if the men do not appear in court.

Overview

  • The CBI filed the plea on Monday before a Mumbai special court, which has listed the matter for arguments next week.
  • Proclamation is sought against Mihir Bhansali, CEO of Modi’s US-based Firestar International, and Sandeep Mistry, alleged to be a director of a Hong Kong-based dummy company.
  • Both were earlier named in a supplementary chargesheet alleging involvement in fraudulent Letters of Undertaking issued with bank officials, causing losses to Punjab National Bank.
  • Previous filings claim they forced dummy-company directors to leave Dubai in April 2018 and destroyed phones and an office server containing account data.
  • Investigators report 1,214 LoUs worth Rs 23,780 crore were issued between 2011 and 2017, with 150 still outstanding, as Nirav Modi remains in UK extradition proceedings and trials for other accused have not begun.
