Overview
- The CBI registered an FIR Monday after a complaint from a UCO Bank zonal head that flagged irregular account openings at the Habibganj branch.
- Investigators say 118 savings accounts were opened in MBA students’ names without their knowledge and that about Rs 99.48 lakh in government scholarships was credited and withdrawn between January 2020 and October 2021.
- Six people have been named in the FIR, including the then senior manager of the UCO Bank branch and five college staff and employees from the Academy of Management College in Bhopal.
- The agency says the scheme used forged account forms and KYC papers, fabricated college bona fide certificates, debit cards delivered to a single intermediary, and mobile numbers tied to receive OTPs for immediate withdrawals.
- CBI teams are examining bank logs, transaction trails, CCTV footage and call detail records to trace where the money went and to determine whether the same method was used in other branches or institutions, which could prompt wider audits and further arrests.
