CBI Arrests Mumbai CGST Superintendent Caught Taking Rs 5 Lakh Bribe

The agency says a complaint-triggered trap followed allegations he sought payment to avert a fabricated Rs 98 lakh tax demand.

Overview

  • Ankit Aggarwal, a superintendent with CGST Audit-I in Mumbai, was detained on Monday while accepting Rs 5 lakh as an alleged part payment of a larger bribe.
  • The CBI registered a case on December 22 after the director of a private company filed a written complaint, then arranged the trap.
  • The complainant alleged Aggarwal threatened to invent a Rs 98 lakh tax demand after a November 26 audit and initially asked for Rs 20 lakh, later negotiated to Rs 17 lakh.
  • Searches at the accused’s residence yielded Rs 18.30 lakh in unexplained cash and property purchase deeds dated April 2025 (Rs 40.315 lakh) and June 2024 (Rs 32.10 lakh).
  • Investigators also seized digital material from his office related to the audit report, and the CBI said the probe remains ongoing.
