CATL and Changan Unveil First Mass-Produced Sodium-Ion EV and Global Rollout Plan

The companies pitch sodium-ion as a safer, cold-resilient option for affordable EVs.

Overview

  • Changan presented the Nevo A06, also known as Qiyuan A06, as the first production passenger car with CATL’s Naxtra sodium-ion battery.
  • The 45 kWh pack is quoted at about 400 km CLTC range with cell energy density around 175 Wh/kg.
  • CATL claims the chemistry charges at −30°C and retains roughly 90% usable capacity at −40°C, with stable discharge reported at even lower temperatures.
  • Abuse tests at full charge—compression, nail penetration, and full cutting—were reported to show no fire, explosion, smoke, or thermal runaway.
  • Changan launched a 2026 Global Testing Season spanning Inner Mongolia, Southeast Asia, the European Alps, Eurasia, and Mexico, with an Antarctica drive for the Avatr 12 planned within about 18 months.
