Overview
- Cathay announced on Friday that passenger and cargo fuel surcharges will increase for tickets issued from Aug. 1 as the airline reverses cuts made since May.
- Long-haul passenger surcharges will rise about 41% to HK$1,362 per sector for routes including North America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
- Surcharges on other passenger routes will move to HK$198 for mainland China, HK$633 for South Asia and HK$339 for other short- and medium-haul sectors.
- Cargo fuel surcharges departing Hong Kong will be set at HK$10.10/kg for long-haul, HK$5.10/kg for medium-haul and HK$2.80/kg for short-haul effective Aug. 1.
- Cathay cited IATA data showing average jet fuel near US$149.40 a barrel for the week ending July 16 and said the surcharge mechanism lets it pass volatile fuel costs to customers while keeping base fares unchanged.
