Cathay Pacific Forecasts Up to 75% Jump in First‑Half Profit

Stronger passenger and cargo demand plus a one‑off HK$1.4 billion accounting gain have lifted earnings despite elevated jet fuel costs.

Overview

  • The airline told investors it expects first‑half net profit of HK$6.0 billion to HK$6.5 billion, up from HK$3.7 billion a year earlier.
  • Cathay said the forecast was supported by recovering demand across its full‑service network, low‑cost unit HK Express and Cathay Cargo.
  • The group reported combined Cathay and HK Express traffic of more than 3.1 million passengers in June and about 145,000 tonnes of freight for Cathay Cargo, both roughly 9% higher year‑on‑year.
  • Results include a one‑time accounting gain of about HK$1.4 billion from dilution of its Air China stake and are not indicative of recurring operating profit.
  • The company warned that sustained high jet fuel prices remain a material cost headwind for margins and the full interim results are due in August.
