Catalonia Issues 53 Fines as Spain’s V-16 Beacon Rule Takes Hold

Using only the beacon without switching on hazard lights can lead to €200 fines.

Overview

  • Spain’s connected V-16 beacon became compulsory on January 1 for cars, vans, buses and goods vehicles, replacing warning triangles for presegnalization and linking incidents to the DGT 3.0 platform.
  • The Mossos d'Esquadra have issued 53 sanctions in Catalonia for not carrying an approved beacon, with most checks recorded on the AP-7 and C-58, as the region enforces the rule systematically.
  • Elsewhere, authorities report isolated cases such as a complaint in Valencia, and national bodies have not provided comprehensive sanction data.
  • A driver was fined €200 for failing to activate hazard lights despite correctly placing a V-16 device, underscoring that both signals must operate simultaneously when a vehicle is immobilized.
  • DGT guidance instructs motorists to switch on hazard lights first, place the V-16 on the highest point of the vehicle, and leave the car only if it is safe, while motorcycles remain exempt though their riders are advised to use the beacon voluntarily.
