CAS Upholds Ban on Team GB's Novel Skeleton Helmet Ahead of Cortina Olympics

Arbitrators ruled the pointed rear showed an aerodynamic design that falls outside current IBSF shape rules.

Overview

  • The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Feb. 7 denied Team GB’s appeal, keeping the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation’s Jan. 29 ban in force.
  • CAS found the helmet departed from the standard shape, citing a considerably protruding rear developed to enhance aerodynamic performance.
  • The British federation argued the design prioritized safety and anticipated IBSF regulations slated for 2026–27, which are not yet in effect.
  • Team GB will compete in the helmets used throughout the 2025–26 season, with official training in Cortina starting Monday and races beginning Feb. 12–13.
  • Britain’s medal hopes remain high, with world champion Matt Weston viewed as the favorite and Marcus Wyatt also considered a podium contender.
