Overview
- Wetherholt was activated on Wednesday, Sept. 16, and returned to the lineup as the Cardinals’ leadoff hitter and starting second baseman.
- Manager Oliver Marmol said the team will treat the return as a mini rehab and limit Wetherholt’s game time to six innings initially while monitoring his right wrist tendinitis.
- Wetherholt was placed on the 10-day injured list on Aug. 30 after a month of wrist pain and missed about 15 games before this activation.
- To clear roster space for his return the Cardinals designated infielder Ramón Urías and right-hander Peter Strzelecki for assignment.
- Despite the layoff he has a productive rookie season—about .242 with 17 home runs, strong counting totals and 22 Outs Above Average—which keeps him in Rookie of the Year discussion and lets the club evaluate internal options like Thomas Saggese and Bryan Torres for 2027 playing time.
