Caravan Blaze Forces Evacuation of Tesco in Glastonbury

Fire crews contained the flames overnight before handing the scene to police to investigate a possible deliberate ignition.

Overview

  • A fire started in two caravans close to the Tesco on Wirral Park Road on Saturday evening and store staff evacuated customers as a precaution.
  • Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue mobilised multiple appliances and an aerial ladder platform and brought the blaze under control by about 1.40am.
  • Firefighters used breathing apparatus, hose reels, main jets, thermal imaging and ventilation to extinguish the fire and check for hotspots.
  • Two caravans were completely destroyed and the store suffered around 10% external damage while there were no reported injuries.
  • The scene was handed to store staff and police and Tesco closed the branch for the night with plans to reopen the following morning after damage assessment and smoke clearance.
