CAQM Mandates Uniform 50 mg/Nm³ PM Limit for 17 Industry Categories in Delhi-NCR

The move follows CPCB recommendations informed by an IIT Kanpur study that found the tighter cap technically achievable.

Overview

  • Large and medium units must meet the new particulate standard by August 1, 2026, with all remaining covered industries required to comply by October 1, 2026.
  • The cap applies to 17 CPCB-identified sectors, including red-category medium and large units, food processing with boilers, textile plants with thermic heaters, and metal industries operating furnaces.
  • Industrial stack emissions were cited as a major driver of particulate pollution and secondary particle formation in the region, underpinning the decision to tighten controls.
  • Units already subject to stricter particulate limits below 50 mg/Nm³ under existing consents or laws are exempt from this standard.
  • State governments, pollution control boards in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, and the DPCC have been directed to enforce the rule and run stakeholder outreach, supported by CPCB technical guidance on control technologies such as bag filters, wet scrubbers and electrostatic precipitators via empanelled vendors.
