Cape Town Bread-Truck Killer Ayanda Dayi Gets Four Life Terms Plus 102 Years

The judge said his crimes showed extreme violence, no remorse, and a grave risk to the public.

Overview

  • Acting Judge Mandy Van Leeve, presiding in a circuit court sitting at Wynberg, sentenced Dayi after convictions spanning four murders, attempted murder, two robberies with aggravating circumstances, theft, and multiple firearms and ammunition offences.
  • The court issued life terms for each murder and added fixed terms including 15 years for each robbery, 15 years for each illegal firearm count, four years for each illegal ammunition count, five years for theft of a firearm, and 10 years for attempted murder, and declared him unfit to possess a firearm.
  • The case covered a January 24, 2024 double murder and hijacking in Du Noon and the widely circulated May 16, 2024 Delft bread-truck shooting that killed two delivery workers and left a third man, Aphiwe Nogaya, seriously wounded.
  • Investigators linked Dayi to the crimes through forensic evidence, including a bullet matched to a recovered firearm and his fingerprints on a hijacked vehicle later found in Gushindoda.
  • Prosecutors highlighted prior convictions for robbery and rape and his 2018 parole release to argue poor rehabilitation prospects, and the NPA and Western Cape DPP publicly welcomed the outcome.
