Cannone Suspended for Four Matches After Nations Championship Red Card

The Foul Play Review Committee reduced a six-week entry point by two weeks after Cannone accepted the foul, producing a ban that covers Italy’s next test plus three Benetton club games.

  • Niccolò Cannone was sent off for making contact with All Blacks scrum-half Cam Roigard’s head at a ruck on Saturday in Wellington and the on-field yellow was upgraded to a red after TMO review.
  • The Nations Championship Foul Play Review Committee judged the 52nd-minute offence merited a low-end six-week entry point before applying a two-week reduction for Cannone’s admission, conduct and remorse.
  • As a result Cannone has been suspended for four weeks from all forms of the game and will miss Italy’s Test against Australia on 18 July plus three Benetton matches in September.
  • The ruling shows how the competition’s process works: referees and the TMO can upgrade cards, the FPRC sets entry-point bans under Law 9 and mitigation can reduce the final suspension.
  • A separate round-two red-card for Fiji halfback Simione Kuruvoli remains unresolved with an FPRC hearing outcome scheduled for 15 July, so further disciplinary news is expected.
