Provisional INE figures point to a national rise in respiratory deaths that may force new regional public‑health priorities.

Overview

  • The Instituto Nacional de Estadística published provisional data Tuesday showing 441,270 deaths in Spain in 2025 and that cancer accounted for about 26.3–26.4% of fatalities.
  • Diseases of the circulatory system were the second leading cause, making up roughly 25.7% of deaths and keeping tumors and heart conditions as the dominant causes nationally.
  • Deaths from respiratory diseases rose about 9% nationwide in 2025, driven by increases in pneumonia and influenza, and the rise was acute in Galicia where respiratory deaths climbed roughly 14%.
  • Regional patterns vary sharply: Asturias, Castilla y León and Galicia recorded the highest tumor mortality rates per 100,000, while the Community of Madrid had among the lowest tumor and circulatory rates.
  • The provisional figures show lung and colon cancers remain the deadliest tumor types and, together with an ageing population and local spikes in respiratory illness, they underline where health services and prevention efforts may need to be focused.
