Overview
- CS PowerTech, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar, officially opened the first 2.1 GW phase of its Jeffersonville, Indiana PV cell plant on Friday and will ramp phase-one output over the coming months.
- The plant is configured to make heterojunction (HJT) n-type bifacial cells, a higher-efficiency cell design that U.S. coverage identifies as being produced domestically for the first time.
- At full buildout the Jeffersonville site is expected to exceed 6 GW of annual cell output, support more than 1,200 skilled manufacturing and technical jobs, and represent nearly $1 billion in local investment.
- Cells from Jeffersonville will feed CS PowerTech’s module assembly line in Mesquite, Texas, and Canadian Solar has said it plans to expand the Indiana site before year-end and boost Texas assembly capacity toward 10 GW.
- The move deepens domestic supply-chain resilience for projects that favor U.S.-made content and marks a technological divergence from other U.S. cell lines that use PERC or TOPCon n-type designs.
