Overview
- The federal government approved a repayable C$195 million loan to Xanadu, announced on Friday, Aug. 28, to fund the federal portion of a manufacturing and R&D hub in Etobicoke called Inception.
- Inception will occupy a 158,000‑square‑foot former Campbell Soup plant and will test, package and assemble Xanadu’s light‑based quantum chips as well as the servers and racks that house them.
- Xanadu says the project will cost about $893 million for R&D and buildout, is expected to create roughly 275 jobs, and will begin receiving some clean‑room machinery by late 2026 with fit‑out starting in early 2027.
- The loan is repayable and, according to CEO Christian Weedbrook, repayments will be tied to a percentage of future revenue; Xanadu is still negotiating potential provincial support to reach a combined C$390 million funding envelope.
- The investment under the Strategic Response Fund fits a broader push to keep quantum firms in Canada as Xanadu pursues a roadmap to a US$1‑billion quantum data centre and aims, as a company projection, to scale toward roughly 500 logical qubits while competing for U.S. DARPA work.
