Canada Joins GermanNorwegian Type 212CD Submarine Programme

The move aims to strengthen NATO’s defence in the north through a shared fleet of identical submarines.

Overview

  • Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney formally announced that Canada will join the GermanNorwegian Type 212CD programme and plans to procure up to 12 submarines.
  • Norway has said its deliveries will begin in 2029 and Canada’s first submarine is expected in the early 2030s.
  • When all orders are complete the three countries will have up to 24 identical Type 212CD boats, improving interoperability, training and maintenance across their navies.
  • Norwegian officials say the deal opens contracts for Norway’s defence suppliers and that Norwegian companies will provide equipment for Canadian vessels, but exact industrial shares and financing still need to be negotiated.
  • Leaders from Canada, Germany and Norway issued a joint statement linking the submarine pact to a wider, long-term transatlantic partnership covering investment, energy, artificial intelligence, space and critical minerals.
