Camper Rescued After Falling Into Campground Vault Toilet

The rescue shows sealed waterless holding tanks can trap toxic gas, making self-rescue impossible.

Overview

  • A man at Camp Edison in Shaver Lake fell into the vault toilet’s chemical holding tank while trying to retrieve sunglasses, an incident that took place on Saturday, June 20, and left him trapped for about 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Fresno County deputies, Cal Fire firefighters and campground staff performed a confined-space extraction, decontaminated the camper for exposure to urine, fecal matter and chemicals, and reported that he walked away without serious injury.
  • Officials said the sunglasses were likely lost to the vault and responders initially relied on a Spanish translator because the camper spoke only Spanish.
  • Experts and safety groups warned that vault toilets are sealed, waterless tanks that can quickly build dangerous concentrations of methane and hydrogen sulfide and harbor infectious pathogens, so attempting to retrieve dropped items can be deadly.
  • The episode echoes past falls into pit or vault toilets and has prompted renewed warnings from authorities and park staff advising visitors to leave items in the tank and notify campground personnel rather than trying to retrieve them.
