Cambridge Jury Convicts Chas Corrigan of Murder of Student Mohammed Algasim

Sentencing will follow a pre-sentence report after a swift guilty verdict at Cambridge Crown Court.

Overview

  • Jurors found the 22-year-old guilty of murdering Mohammed Algasim after just over two hours of deliberation, and he was remanded in custody.
  • Algasim, a 20-year-old Saudi student on an English-language placement, was stabbed in the neck outside student accommodation near the railway station late on August 1, 2025, and died shortly after.
  • CCTV played in court showed Corrigan approach the group, walk away, return, reach into his pocket and then strike, with limited words heard by witnesses.
  • Toxicology confirmed alcohol, cocaine and cannabis in Corrigan’s system, and he told the court he had been drinking heavily and had taken cocaine, while claiming he carried the knife for protection and did not realise he made contact.
  • Investigators said Corrigan discarded his high-visibility jacket and the knife after the attack, and CCTV later captured his father retrieving the jacket; Peter Corrigan has admitted assisting an offender in a separate case.
