Cambridge Court Sets April 7 Deadline for Fitness Report in Huntingdon Train Stabbings Case

The judge ordered a fitness-to-plead report to determine whether the case can proceed to a conventional trial.

Overview

  • Anthony Williams, 32, is being treated at Rampton high-security psychiatric hospital and is currently judged psychotic and unfit to plead.
  • Judge Mark Bishop directed forensic psychiatrist Dr Ian Cumming to file a fitness-to-plead report by April 7, with a further hearing set for April 14.
  • A provisional trial date has been listed for June 22, though the court indicated the timetable may be revisited once the fitness assessment is received.
  • Prosecutor Christopher Paxton KC told the court Williams’s condition appears entrenched and noted the June fixture could become a trial of the facts if unfitness is confirmed.
  • Williams faces multiple charges across incidents, including 10 attempted murders on an LNER train that diverted to Huntingdon, an attempted murder on a DLR train at Pontoon Dock, and alleged offences in Peterborough such as attempted wounding, affray, theft of kitchen knives, possession of a bladed article, ABH and common assault.
