California Snow Survey Finds Statewide Snowpack at Two-Thirds of Average

With the April 1 peak approaching, state and federal suppliers are projecting reduced deliveries.

Overview

  • The Department of Water Resources’ third manual survey found 28 inches at Phillips Station, equal to 47% of average at the site, with statewide snowpack at 66% for the date.
  • Statewide readings improved from late January’s roughly 59% of average after February storms, yet officials say conditions remain well below normal.
  • Snow distribution is uneven, with the southern Sierra near 90% of average, the central Sierra around 67%, and the northern Sierra near 46%.
  • A warm storm raised median snow water equivalent by about 5% as rain percolated into the snowpack and refroze, adding water content despite limited new snow.
  • Preliminary allocations point to cutbacks, with the State Water Project signaling about 30% of requested supplies and major southern Central Valley Project contractors projected at 15%, even as major reservoirs sit above average.
