Overview
- Governor Gavin Newsom announced on June 29 that Claude will be available immediately to every California state agency, city, and county through the Department of Technology’s new SITeS portal at a 50% discount.
- The rollout builds on existing pilots that used Claude in projects such as Engaged California, the Poppy tool, the DMV, CalOES, CDT and the Department of Health Care Services.
- Anthropic will supply free workforce training, hands-on workflow help and technical assistance from its developers to speed integration and use in tasks like document drafting, summarization and customer service.
- The state deal comes as the federal government has restricted some Anthropic models, designated the company a potential supply-chain risk and allowed limited access to Mythos 5 for authorized users on June 26 while talks continue over restoring other models.
- Officials say the move aims to boost efficiency for public servants but raises policy questions about hallucinations, cybersecurity, regulatory oversight and the risk of long-term procurement lock-in from bundled training and support.
